A death certificate is an official record to prove that an individual has died. In additional to identifiable personal information, an official death certificate must also include a physician’s determination of the cause of death. A death certificate is necessary for surviving family members to close the deceased’s affairs. This includes, but is not limited to, closing a bank or credit account, settling an estate, activating survivor benefits, and closing social media accounts. Closing social media accounts has become an important aspect of settling the deceased’s affairs, as many scammers will hack a deceased’s account to use their identity.
