The process by which a state ensures that vehicles are registered, and any fees and taxes are paid by the vehicle owner, is called vehicle registration. A license plate, sticker for your vehicle, and certificate of registration are all issued through the process. The entity which handles vehicle registration varies state to state, for example, in North Carolina, it is called the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), but in Michigan, the Secretary of State (SOS) handles vehicle registration. Regardless what the issuing entity is called, all states require vehicle registration in the United States.
