Credit risk is a lender’s risk that a borrower may not repay a loan, in which case the lender could lose the principal of the loan and the anticipated interest. There is risk associated with every loan, but typically, the higher the credit risk, the higher the interest rate on the loan. Common examples of credit risk include mortgages, car loans, and credit cards, but any type of loan, even a “loan” of services, has risk. For example, if a business sends invoices at the end of each month for services rendered during the previous month, the business is incurring a credit risk that the client will not pay for services rendered.
