A hit rate is a metric typically used in the business world to show the successful percentage of sales converted based on the number of visitors to a web page. However, as it pertains to personal record searches, a hit rate refers to the percentage of individuals who have a "hit" come up during a background screening or criminal records check. A hit during a background check refers to any sort of result or discrepancy aside from a clean record. It can be something as simple as an unpaid motor vehicle violation or a small financial violation, to something more serious like a criminal record. Hit rates are often in the 25% range, which means that 1 in every 4 people who undergo a background or criminal record screening will yield some sort of undesirable record.
