Law Enforcement Database

Comprised of multiple systems, a law enforcement database is an information network that allows law enforcement agencies to gain access to records such as warrants, protection orders, stolen property, criminal histories, and other vital investigative files. Some databases within this network operate on a national basis such as the National Crime Information Center. The NCIC is maintained by the FBI and used as a centralized system to ease information flow between federal, tribal, state, and local law enforcement branches while other databases, such as those housing motor vehicle records, are state-based.
